The Web's Busiest Visitors Are No Longer Human
For the first time in the history of the web, automated traffic has overtaken human traffic. According to Cloudflare, whose infrastructure powers a significant share of the internet, automated bot requests now account for roughly 57 percent of traffic to ordinary webpages, compared with about 43 percent generated by humans. Cloudflare co-founder and CEO Matthew Prince called it a milestone that arrived well ahead of schedule, noting that he had originally expected the crossover to happen in 2027.
The shift is being driven almost entirely by the rapid rise of AI agents, autonomous systems that browse, retrieve, and process web content on behalf of a person. It is worth noting that these agents are, in nearly every case, carrying out tasks that a human has initiated. Where a human might browse five websites before making a purchase, an AI agent working on that same task might browse five thousand, gathering and comparing information at a speed and scale no person could match on their own. In that sense, this is less a story about machines replacing people online, and more a story about people delegating the busywork of browsing to a tireless digital assistant.
Of course, it is important to acknowledge the implications this shift may have for how the web sustains itself financially. Prince pointed out that agents do not click on ads, which has long been the internet's dominant business model, and he suggested that one solution may be a system in which automated visitors pay for the content they access, in much the same way a subscriber might. Rather than treating this as a threat, Prince framed it as an opportunity: if implemented well, he believes the shift could eventually make more of the web free for human users again, describing it as a potential "golden age" for the internet.
It is a curious thought experiment to imagine a web increasingly shaped around the preferences of machines rather than people, and it raises a genuinely interesting question about what the internet is ultimately for. If this pace of change continues, the coming years may bring a web that looks and behaves quite differently to the one we know today, with entirely new ways for people, agents, and publishers to interact with one another.
